Chapter Ten

One year later

After he’d become chief, Gurrkk had led his people on their annual migration south. It wasn’t only for the warmer climate, but to visit other clans and strengthen alliances made during previous generations. His sister told him he’d filled the role of chief as if it had been tailor-made for him. That was the highest praise he’d ever received.

Bael was now on the council, much to his relief, and she, along with the five other female members of various ages, agreed to his mating with one of the females of the Desert Flower clan. She was strong, intelligent, and ruthless in battle. He’d seen her ferocity firsthand when his clan had joined hers to fight off a warring clan from the desert. While his clan didn’t seek war and much preferred peace, there were others of a more violent bent who made battle the center of their society. Tirk’s clan balanced out the joys of battle with the comfort of peace.

Tirk was perfect for the life-giver of his children. But it would mean she would have to leave her clan and come with him. And live with his people until the child or children reached puberty, since females reared the children until that time. Then he, and the other males he selected, would take over until the child or children became adults and able to make their own decisions where they wished to live. Except, of course, the child he selected to be his heir would need to stay with him.

It was a lot to ask. And while there were plenty of strong females in his clan, he knew they needed fresh blood, and it would also strengthen the alliance they had with the Desert Flower clan. Her clan was similar to his in beliefs and culture, in contrast to other clans of the plains and desert. While his people relished the thrill of the hunt and enjoyed battle and honored the dead, there were other clans who sought out violence for violence’s sake. And those were the ones that ruined the reputation of all orcs and justified the humans hating them.

He’d approached Tirk first before mentioning it to the council. No need to ask for their approval if the female wanted nothing to do with him. Much to his delight, when she’d heard his proposal, she’d beaten her chest and then grabbed his head and smashed their foreheads together, rumbling in gratitude and acceptance. Bael had been his most vocal supporter, and the council had needed little convincing. The females admired Tirk and welcomed her. For the rest of their stay, which ended up being a couple of months, he rarely left her hut. It wasn’t long before she was with child, much to everyone’s amusement.

And now he was home, in the forests, with mountains in the distance. Tirk slept in his hut, swollen with life and tired, and he sat outside as dawn approached. He held Eli’s drawing in his hands. The image was smudged, the parchment weathered, and yet it was still his most prized possession.
